Report No: WH-651-0282.01
Date Tested May 16, 1989

PROCEDURE:

Run No. 1

On May 16, 1989, a representative of Warnock Hersey witnessed the Flame Out Kitchen Towel extinguish a fire burning in a cast iron pot. The cast iron pot was 13-inches in diameter and 6-inches deep, filled with vegetable oil. The pot was heated with a propane Cook "n" Fry stove. The oil was ignited with a hand-held fire-starter.

When the flaming reached its peak in 20 seconds, the Flame Out Kitchen Towel was placed over the burning pot of oil. The fire was extinguished immediately. After the Flame Out Kitchen Towel was in place, the pot of cooking oil did not emit any smoke.

Results:

The fire in the burning pot of oil was immediately extinguished when the Flame Out Kitchen Towel was placed over the pot.

Run No. 2

Procedure was identical to Run No. 1, until 10 seconds after the Flame Out Kitchen Towel was placed on the burning pot of oil. At this point, the flames were extinguished and the Flame Out Kitchen Towel was removed from the pot of oil. The pot emitted heavy gray smoke. The Flame Out Kitchen Towel was replaced on the pot of smoking oil, and the smoking ceased.

Note: The same towel was used on both test runs.

MATERIALS:

Flame Out Kitchen Towel is a 20 inch x 30-inch cotton towel, terry cloth type, which has been impregnated with the Flame Out Fire Retardant Treatment. This treatment is nontoxic.

DISCUSSION:

The Flame Out Fire Retardant Treatment can be applied to any and all fabrics and make that material fire retardant. This could be a treated blanket.

The size of the towel is important, in that it be large enough to completely cover the fire.
