3. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Basic Use: (Flame-No-More™) clear fire retardant coatings do not extinguish fires, but their unique intumescent formulations protect and insulate the surfaces to which they are applied. When temperatures reach approximately 300°F (149°C), the fire retardant coating foams or swells into an insulating blanket. This dense carbonaceous foam is an excellent insulator against the fire and reflects much of the radiant heat, keeping the coated surface cool and protected. The coating also releases inert non-toxic gases which starve the flames of oxygen and drive them away from the coated surface.

(Flame-No-More™) is listed and classified with Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc. as providing specific flame spread criteria at various coverage rates. All wood coatings are produced under an inspection program supervised by Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc.

(Flame-No-More™) coatings can be applied to combustible surfaces such as wood and fabrics. Typical installations include wood shingles, attics, entries, elevators, stairwells, corridors, cabinetry, fixtures, draperies, carpet, and any combustible material in apartments, religious buildings, high-rise offices, hotels, night clubs, restaurants, public buildings, medical facilities, shopping centers and educational buildings.

Limitations: (Flame-No-More™) coatings are not recommended in applications exposed to continuously running water. Wood surfaces which are going to be painted or otherwise finished should be sanded and stained prior to application of (Flame-No-More™). Primers, enamels, varnishes and other sealants should be applied after (Flame-No-More™) treatment has been allowed to dry completely. Finishes applied over (Flame-No-More™) may be combustible and may decrease (Flame-No-More™) flame retardant properties. Use in well ventilated areas.

Composition and Materials: (Flame-No-More™) fire retardant coatings are manufactured solely by CareChem Corporation. (Flame-No-More™) is a registered trademark of the CareChem Corporation for fire retardant treatment. (Flame-No-More™) coatings are also used in pressure treated wood, making the chemical part of the wood fiber itself. All of the products are clear.

Building Codes: BOCA National Building Code, ICBO Uniform Building Code, SBCCI Standard Building Code, and NFPA Life Safety Code. Always consult local building codes for specific requirements. All of these coatings are a one coat application approved by UL on any wood substrate.

4. TECHNICAL DATA

Applicable Standards: (Flame-No-More™) coatings were tested by Underwriters' Laboratories for surface burning characteristics in accordance with the method described by UL 723 (Steiner Tunnel Test, equivalent ASTM E84). All materials were assigned a UL classification marking with the following specific results: Class A flame spread of 25 and Class B flame spread of 30.

Specification Writers - Please contact CareChem Corporation before writing specifications on this product.

Preparing the Work Area: All surfaces must be clean of dirt, grease and anything that will prevent the material from absorbing (Flame-No-More™) properly. Wear impervious gloves as necessary to avoid any contact; rubber or neoprene. Wear protective glasses or goggles. Use NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator suitable for use with inorganic acids and organic vapors if proper ventilation can not be provided. Adequate clothing is recommended to minimize chances of contact with skin. Cover all items that are not to be treated (fixtures, appliances, glass, electrical outlets and any type of metal, etc.)

5. INSTALLATION

Always apply (Flame-No-More™) to a test sample before treating entire area to insure satisfaction. Apply with the grain, not against it. Overlap painted areas to insure proper coverage. Keep track of treated areas. (Flame-No-More™) usually causes little change in the appearance of wood; however, you can often tell what has been treated before it dries by the wet look. When treating dry wood two coats are recommended; let first coat dry before applying second. Apply extra amounts of (Flame-No-More™) to high risk areas such as framing lumber.

Cure Rate: As supplied, (Flame-No-More™) Class "A" has a drying time of two hours at 75°F and 55 percent relative humidity. (Flame-No-More™) Class "B" has a drying time of one and a half hours at 75°F and 55 percent relative humidity. Temperatures lower than 75°F will result in a significantly longer drying time, while temperatures higher than 75°F will result in a significantly shorter drying time. See the "Limitations" section for further precautions .

Inspection to Test Flame Retardancy: Apply (Flame-No-More™) in a normal manner to a sample piece of wood before applying to entire area. Let sample completely dry at room temperature. To test, suspend treated wood above butane lighter so that the flame touches edge of wood from below, for ten seconds. If the wood ceases to burn when flame is removed, it has become fire retardant. If wood continues to burn after removal of lighter flame, the wood should be retreated.

Quality Control: CareChem Corporation advises the end user to keep a small sample of the material treated with (Flame-No-More™) on file at all times for building inspection purposes. This will assure all inspectors that (Flame-No-More™) has been properly applied.

Clean Up: Excess overspray can be removed with a wet sponge. CAUTION - Always follow Southern Polymer Tech, Inc. (CareChem Corporation) instructions when handling and using (Flame-No-More™) products.

Delivery and Storage: (Flame-No-More™) is shipped in ready-to-use form. Do not dilute. (Flame-No-More™) should be stored out of the weather in unopened plastic containers. Do not freeze. Do not overheat Class "A". All products are nonflammable. Keep out of reach of children. Agitate before use.
